Accessibility Statement

Last updated: April 2026

1. Our commitment

Give Time is committed to making our volunteer management platform accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard across all areas of our application.

2. What we do well

  • All colours meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast requirements (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
  • All interactive elements have visible focus indicators
  • Form inputs have associated labels
  • Buttons and links have descriptive text or aria-labels
  • Skip-to-content links on all pages for keyboard users
  • Modal dialogs trap focus and return focus on close
  • Dynamic content changes announced via ARIA live regions
  • Error messages announced to screen readers via role="alert"
  • The app works on mobile devices and supports pinch-to-zoom
  • Push notifications use visual indicators (notification bell with badge count)
  • No auto-playing media or unexpected audio
  • The app functions without JavaScript for initial page loads (server-rendered)
  • Automated accessibility testing (axe-core) runs on every deployment

3. Known limitations

We are honest about where we fall short. The following areas need improvement:

  • Screen reader testing has been limited — we plan to conduct thorough testing with NVDA and VoiceOver
  • Some complex interactive patterns (e.g. drag-and-drop) are not yet fully keyboard-accessible

4. BSL and Deaf accessibility

We are actively developing British Sign Language (BSL) video support for shift briefings. This will allow coordinators to attach BSL video explanations to shifts and roles, making Give Time more accessible to Deaf volunteers. We are working with the Deaf community to ensure these features are genuinely useful, not tokenistic.

5. How we test

  • Automated testing with axe-core on every deployment (critical and serious violations fail the build)
  • Manual testing with keyboard-only navigation
  • Colour contrast verification against WCAG 2.1 AA ratios
  • Testing on real mobile devices (iOS and Android)
  • We plan to incorporate regular screen reader testing and user testing with disabled volunteers

6. Report an issue

If you experience an accessibility barrier while using Give Time, please tell us. We want to know so we can fix it. Contact us at hello@give-time.org and we will respond within 5 working days.
